LOS ANGELES — Pacing back and forth and moving his hands nonstop as if he were signaling jets to land on an aircraft carrier, Rams coach Sean McVay provided plenty of evidence of his well-known personality trait of being energetic and passionate while addressing more than 60 high school foot…
Tom Brady is done. Really, he is. No more playing in the NFL for that guy. How many times does ol’ TB12 have to say it? “I’m certain I’m not playing again,” the seven-time Super Bowl champion told Sports Illustrated on Thursday. “So I’ve tried to make that clear and I hate to continue to pro…
PITTSBURGH — Thanks to their epic tank job (besides the one they've pulled this month), the Pirates have the No. 1 pick in the rapidly approaching MLB draft. This would be a bigger deal if it were football or hockey. It should be a big deal in this case, too, because the options are enticing…
The Memorial has another loaded field. That included the pro-am with a cast of athletes and celebrities. The tournament Jack Nicklaus built already was among the best on the PGA Tour. Now it's an elevated event with a $20 million purse. It's part of a crowded PGA Tour schedule that's going t…
They were No. 8 seeds. They barely got into the playoffs after up-and-down regular seasons. They had to face the No. 1 overall seeds in Round 1 of the postseason. They had to win Game 7s in Boston just to keep their seasons alive. They are Eastern Conference champions. They are four wins fro…

Eri Yoshida is a 31-year-old Japanese knuckleball pitcher with a sidearm delivery that she hopes might carry her to the big leagues in the United States or Japan. She says "I know it's a really difficult challenge, but I have a dream in my heart that I really want to stand on a mound in the majors with a knuckleball." Even Yoshida acknowledges that it's a far-fetched fantasy. But it's also very real. She travels this week to play for two months in the Empire League, an independent baseball league in upstate New York. Yoshida has pitched in games in Japan, the United States, and Canada — against men and women.
Tom Walter is coach of the Wake Forest team that is the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Baseball has often played a secondary role during his 27-year career even though he has won more than 800 games and taken three different schools to the national tournament. Walter donated a kidney to one of his Wake Forest players. The kidney recipient Kevin Jordan and Walter co-founded a nonprofit focused on social justice. Walter also met the challenge of moving his players at New Orleans to New Mexico State for school and fall practices following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
It's been nearly a decade since there was this much hype surrounding the Spanish Grand Prix. The last time the Formula One crowd in Spain had such high hopes of celebrating a victory by Fernando Alonso was back in 2013 when the two-time champion was driving for Ferrari. Alonso went on to win that race in Barcelona but since then has never been in a realistic position to make it to the top step of the podium again at home. That was his last win in F1 anywhere and the last by any Spaniard in the local race. The 41-year-old Alonso arrives this season revitalized with a strong Aston Martin team.

Purdy, with his ulnar collateral ligament repaired by an internal brace, appears slightly ahead of schedule in his comeback from an injury that led to the 49ers’ NFC Championship Game defeat in Philadelphia four ...
When the Steelers selected inside linebacker Mark Robinson in the seventh round of the 2022 draft, they knew it was going to take some time for him to develop. Robinson played just one season of major-college football at Ole Miss, and that was the only time he ever played inside linebacker. Robinson's previous college experience was at running back at Southeast Missouri State and Presbyterian, ...
Standing a few feet from a golf green, Deshaun Watson made a pitch for DeAndre Hopkins to join him in Cleveland. The Browns quarterback said that he has spoken to Hopkins, his close friend and former Houston teammate, and encouraged the three-time All-Pro wide receiver to consider a reunion. Hopkins is a free agent after the Arizona Cardinals released him last week. Watson said he has been in contact with Hopkins, his teammate for three seasons.
The Las Vegas Aces celebrated last season’s championship over the weekend and are looking once again like the dominant team in the league. An easy win over Minnesota the next day has Las Vegas at 4-0, winning by an average of 24.75 points. Las Vegas sits atop the AP WNBA Power Poll once again.
SEATTLE — Bill Boone of Mukilteo has a shadow box on his wall to display the Mariners' jersey of Bret Boone — got to give props to your namesake, right? — and an inset photo of Lou Gehrig. It speaks to Boone's love of baseball, and also to the diagnosis that rocked his life in March of 2020. After being puzzled by weakness in his arms for over a year, Boone received the devastating news that ...
Daris Steen had been dating his future wife, Samantha, for months before he realized her father was Sgt. Rodney M. Davis. That they were even having dinner at his Los Angeles home all those years ago was unexpected because she had stayed away from men who served in the military. But when Steen started talking about his time in the U.S. Marine Corps and pointed to his ribbons hung on a nearby ...
Perhaps it’s the injuries. Perhaps it’s the poor performances in nationally televised games against the Chargers and Packers last December. Perhaps it’s a case of demanding to see Tua Tagovailoa repeat his fabulous start to last season. Whatever the reason, the Dolphins quarterback continues to be disrespected on social media, even by some of his biggest advocates. The biggest slight came ...
A New Hampshire stadium is being recognized for playing a largely unheralded role in helping racially integrate baseball. Much of the attention has been on Jackie Robinson, who broke the major league color barrier in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. But a year earlier, Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella and Cy Young award-winning pitcher Don Newcombe helped make the Nashua Dodgers, a minor league affiliate of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the first racially integrated baseball team in the United States.

Josef Newgarden walked around Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Monday as the Indy 500 champion. The years of frustration that had followed the two-time IndyCar series champion were finally relieved. In an interview with The Associated Press, Newgarden insisted that whether he won the most important race of the year would not define his career. But it's an easier statement to make having that large Indy 500 winner's ring on his finger.

It’s called “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” because the Indianapolis 500 is supposed to be one of the most dramatic and difficult races in the world. Sure, it’s an automobile race. But it’s also very much entertainment, even if Marcus Ericsson vehemently disagrees. The controversial ending to the 107th running of the Indy 500 gave Josef Newgarden the win. Newgarden drives for Roger Penske, who owns the race and Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Late, great Hall of Famer Franco Harris was the best running back in Steelers history. As Art Rooney Sr. once said, "We never won before Franco got here. We never lost much after he did." And No. 3 during ...

PITTSBURGH — Bill Cowher was a Hall of Fame coach. Mike Tomlin will be a Hall of Famer soon after he retires. Pittsburgh has been lucky with terrific football coaches. The Steelers are 3 for 3 with Hall of Fame-caliber men since Chuck Noll was hired before the 1969 season. Think about that for a second. Three greats in 53 consecutive seasons. Noll was the best of the bunch. There is no ...
