Firecracker Frenzy tonight in York
By Bob Sautter
To start with, some inspiring, intuitive comments on Nebraska by Jeff Foxworthy, courtesy of our good neighbor Kerri.
• If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 18 inches of ice, and sit there all day hoping that the food will swim by . . . you might live in Nebraska.
• If you're proud that your region makes the national news 96 nights each year because it's the coldest or hottest spot in the nation . . . you might live in Nebraska.
• If your local Dairy Queen is closed from November through March . . . you might live in Nebraska.
• If someone in a store offers you assistance, and they don't work there . . . you might live in Nebraska.
• If your dad's suntan stops at a line curving around the middle of his forehead . . . you might live in Nebraska.
• If you have worn shorts and a parka at the same time . . . you might live in Nebraska.
• If your town has an equal number of bars and churches . . . you might live in Nebraska.
• If you have had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number . . . you might live in Nebraska.
• If you instinctively walk like a penguin for five months out of the year . . . you might live in Nebraska.
After giving all of these reflections some serious contemplation, I'm pretty sure that I recognize myself, or someone else, or someplace near and dear in every single one of them. Yup, there's no doubt about it . . . I'm pretty darned sure that I live right here in beautiful Nebraska!
The York County Visitors Bureau Office still has complimentary copies of “Trips On A Tankful”, put together by Todd Kirshenbaum when he was with Nebraska Tourism. There are over a dozen wonderful and fun day trips based out of York, allowing travelers the opportunity to explore their very own backyards right here in Nebraska. Events, attractions, dining and shopping options are all together in one folder, free for the asking. Stop in and pick yours up today.
Friday is the much anticipated 2009 Firecracker Frenzy at the York County Fairgrounds. Once again there will be activities for the kids early in the evening as well as a great variety of food vendors to choose from. But new this year will be a two hour performance by Joseph Hall, Nebraska's Elvis from Lincoln. Joseph placed fifth in last year's “America's Got Talent” TV show, and was a very obvious favorite of Judge Sharon Osborne. Admission is free, but you'll want to come early to guarantee a seat as we are expecting at least a couple busloads of Elvis fans from outside the York area.
Rumor has it that Elvis has purchased a theater in Branson, and will be moving there soon to continue his entertainment. Once that happens, we won't be able to enjoy his availability as we are so fortunately able to do currently. Most likely this will be the last time he will be performing for our Firecracker Frenzy extravaganza.
The Chamber Firecracker Frenzy chairs Geri Bartholomew and Amie Kopcho and committee volunteers Jack Vincent, Marilyn Jackman, Ray McKenna, Bruce Wagner, Chad Shroetlin, Mark Jensen, Dr. Nicky White, Dr. Brett Eimermann and Chamber staff have all worked long and hard to bring you one of the central Nebraska's largest and most spectacular fireworks show. Please show your support and appreciation by attending, and by donating to the fireworks collection buckets at the conclusion of the show.
