Death, C. Jerome Smith

C. Jerome Smith, age 76 of McCool Junction, died Friday, June 26, 2009 at York. He was born October 30, 1932 in Ord to Carl and Marguerite (Bailey) Smith. His family moved to a farm north of Exeter in York County. Jerome attended school at Districts 98 and 97. The family then moved to Blue Vale by the Blue River.

He farmed until 1953 and served in the Army during the Korean War until 1955. On June 3, 1956 he married Beverly Green. To this union two sons, Glen Troy and Douglas Jerome, were born. Jerome and Beverly resided on a farm owned by his grandparents until 1961, when they purchased land two miles away. Jerome farmed his entire life and retired to McCool Junction in 1981. He continued to farm with his son Douglas and grandsons. His love of farming was very important in his life. He loved his coffee friends at the “Cave.” He was a member of the First Lutheran Church.  Jerome enjoyed spending time with his family and especially loved watching his grandchildren grow up on the farm.

Mourning his death is his wife Beverly of McCool Jct., son Douglas and his wife Kelly of York, three grandchildren: Tyler and his wife Shannon Smith of Lincoln, Aftan Smith and friend Jerrod Cheney of  Ohiowa and Kyle Smith of York.                         

Also surviving is a brother Max Smith and his wife Norma of York and their family; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Preceding him in death are his parents, son Glen Troy, and grandparents Ralph and Lottie Bailey and Earl and Grace Smith.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York with the Reverend Terry Cosier officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, York.  Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1-9 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6 - 8 p.m. on Monday evening. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation. Condolences may be left for the family at www.metzmortuary.com. Metz Mortuary, York is handling arrangements.
